Thurland (’75) & Lorraine (Boyd HS ’74) Brown
Not everyone celebrates their 40th wedding anniversary with a hike, but Thurland and Lorraine are doing so in a big way. Taking a four-month sabbatical as Lead Pastor of Winchester Wesleyan Church in Ontario, they have set out with their backpacks and walking sticks to walk El Camino de Santiago, a European trail of over 800 km that includes treacherous cliffs, forests, and tidal rivers. On the day of their anniversary Thurland and Lorraine started walking from the community of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in southwestern France and headed over the Pyrenees Mountains before continuing across Spain. Along the way, the couple are staying at various hostels located throughout the route for use by travellers of the walk. They are making their way to the shrine of the apostle St. James the Great, located at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostella in Galicia in northwestern Spain. You can follow the Browns on their journey by reading Thurland’s blog.

William “Billy” Mallock
Our deepest sympathy and prayers are with the family of Billy Mallock who was tragically killed in an air ambulance crash on August 16. Mallock, was a paramedic with almost 20 year of service, when a twin-engine Piper PA31 belonging to Atlantic Charters crashed on its way back from Saint John, just metres from the runway at the Grand Manan Airport in New Brunswick.
First responders from across Canada joined hundreds of other mourners, including Premier David Alward, Lt.-Gov. Graydon Nicholas, Health Minister Ted Flemming, and MLAs, as they gathered on Grand Manan island to pay their respects to a man who helped so many others in need.
After Billy graduated from Bethany Bible College in 1972, he spent a year preaching in Maine before returning to Canada to become a carpenter and to serve with the Fire Department. His death came within just days of celebrating 25 years of marriage with his wife, Katherine (Kathy) Mallock nee Gulliver. He is also survived by two children, Valerie Mallock and Douglas Mallock, both of Grand Manan.
According to his obituary, Billy Mallock was “a kind, generous person who was always willing to lend a hand when needed, share stories, and never spoke an unkind word about anyone.”
Alumni Working Together
Tracy Marr (’13), Stephen Benham (’12), and Jason Kitchen (FS ’12) help those who have a need (food, clothing, furniture, etc.) through a ministry called Needs to Deeds, a Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, home-based ministry that was started by Marr. Close to 150 people per week hear the gospel and see faith being lived as free lunches are served on Mondays and Tuesdays, and a free BBQ meal on Wednesdays. Needs to Deeds offers a hand-up, not a hand-out, as those who receive assistance will volunteer to help others through the organization.
Jedie Elliott (MA ’14, BA ’13) joined the staff of New Hope Wesleyan Church in Kentville, Nova Scotia, as Assistant Pastor. Scott Prime (’92) is Lead Pastor and Elizabeth (Liz) Stewart (’05) is Youth and Children’s Pastor.
