Last fall we implemented a new tradition at Kingswood University, the establishment of a verse of the year. We chose Colossians 1:28, and as hoped, this verse helped provide a focus for the year. It served to remind us that we exist to proclaim Christ and help people become fully mature in Him.
This year we have chosen as our verse of the year Romans 15:5-6.
5 May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, 6 so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
I love how this verse conveys the Christian’s hope. Although we may face challenges, God can give us endurance. Even more encouraging is the knowledge that Christ endured the unendurable for us. Most encouraging of all: God is able and willing to give this same attitude to us! His goal is not merely our deliverance or our happiness, but a spirit that glorifies God.
This year Kingswood’s students, faculty, and staff will spend time around these words, publicly in chapel and privately in times of memorization and meditation. We pray that through these verses the Spirit will equip us to proclaim this message of endurance and encouragement to the glory of God.
